       Speaker:   John V. Quarstein
         

John V. Quarstein an award-winning historian, preservationist, and author is joining Kiwanis for the fourth time.  John has served as the director of the Virginia War Museum since 1978.  He also oversees the management of the City of Newport News’ historic properties including Endview Plantation, Lee Hall Mansion, Young’s Mill, and the Newsome House as well as serving as the historical advisor for The Mariners’ Museum’s U.S.S. Monitor Center project.  He has also served as an adjunct professor at WM, UVA, and VCU and is the author of seven books including Fort Monroe: The Key to the South, C.S.S. Virginia: Mistress of Hampton Roads, Civil War on the Virginia Peninsula, and The Battle of the Ironclads.
He was the recipient of the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 1993 President’s Award for Historic Preservation Award, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy’s Jefferson Davis Gold Medal in 1999.  Presently, he serves on the board of several national organizations including Virginia Civil War Trails, John Singleton Mosby Foundation, and is Chief Historical Advisor for the U.S.S. Monitor Center. An avid duck hunter, John lives in Hampton, and on his Eastern Shore farm with his wife Martha and son John Moran.

Education -- Did You Know?

Kiwanis Indoctrination; Obligations: Part 3 of 3: 
International and district dues are $60.80 each year. The first bill a new member receives reflects a $25 (or $27) item for a Kiwanis International golf shirt, plus an $18.00 processing fee for insurance. There are separate billings for the Shrimp Feast, Snowball, etc. A new policy for members in arrears is a reminder phone call from the club secretary after 60 days.

- The Cal Ripken Baseball 10-Year-Old World Series continues this week at the JCC District Sports Complex off Longhill Road. Volunteers are needed. Please contact Wayne Rickman if interested: 757-880-1008 or ripkenseries2003@aol.com.
