Education -- The Beginning:  Two Detroit men, Allen S. Browne and Joseph C. Prance had an idea in August 1914 to develop an organization as a strictly fraternal club that young professional businessmen could join by paying a $5 membership fee.  The name that Browne had chosen for the group was The Supreme Lodge Benevolent Order Brothers but the growing membership thought a different name would help with recruiting. With help from Detroit’s official historian an Indian phrase - "NunKee-wan-is" - was adapted as a name. In January 1915 "Kiwanis" was approved as the new name.
