In continuing the program from last week,
RESCUE OF USS INDIANAPOLIS
SURVIVORS. By some miracle, a Ventura reconnaissance plane’s
antenna had become entangled and the pilot went to the tail to assist, and
by chance happened to spot a large oil slick. This was four days after
the Navy became aware the USS Indianapolis was missing. Soon after the
spotting, a PBY seaplane landed in rough seas and began picking up and
loading survivors into and onto the plane’s wings and fuselage, as several
rescue ships raced some ten hours to the scene -- arriving at night. Last
week, Richard Paroubek spoke of his and fellow mates five-night four-day
ordeal. Our speaker today is LCMD L. Peter Wren, Rescue Boat Officer from
the USS Bassett, the primary rescue (148 sailors) ship. Author of WE WERE
THERE, Commander Wren will tell us of the horror, and the subsequent
miracles of survival, as well as the aftermath of the Naval
investigation.
